The e-ducational economy continues to strongly influence the re-definition of learning and educational institutions. In addition to the hyped positive effects, on the one hand this influence has brought about attempts in the rationalization of educational insitutions, on the other in the standardization and commodification of knowledge. In this setting we are confronted with the question of how to produce educational technology that does not further the gendered digital divide, prouced by such technologies in other spheres, also in educational institutions. In going about this question, we, the members of the virtual international women's university*, borrowed from existing feminist and critical computing theories in putting together a set of strategies that undermine some ofthe trends in e-ducation. We then used these strategies in developing a
virtual university. In the talk, some of these strategies will be presented within the context of the virtual international women's university.
* The virtual international women's university (vifu), is one of the projects that was initiated during the international women's university (in German internationale Frauen Universität, for short "ifu") which had its first and only semester in Hanover between 15. July and 15. October 2000. The international women's university offered 900 women from over 110 countries the opportunity to participate in a graduate research and study program. ifu was interdisciplinary in scope and methodology of academic work.
